Be Specific
What is the most important aspect of a process? Is it the planning, the activation of your plan or the tasks you create for activation? I believe it’s in being specific with your planning and activation when you’re looking to reach a goal or create your worthy vision.
And yes, there’s a ton of information about creating SMART goals. And in this blog, I am including how I identify and use the process with a few examples. The important aspect is to read this, take notes and make sure you're activating a SMART process when you're thinking about what you want to create. Putting a SMART process in place when planning helps you to be specific and it helps you know where you are on a day to day basis in relation to achieving your goals.
So let’s walk through each part of this process…
Specific - When you create a goal it’s essential to be specific. As when you’re specific you’re clearly defining the thing that you want to achieve, creating a focus for your following action steps. It is the work of developing a specific aim and setting your compass or GPS for the goal you want to achieve. For instance, if you say, “I want to generate income.” It’s important to specify how much income I want to generate. So if you say, “I want to generate $5,000 within this week.” Then you have added specificity to your goal.
Measurable - When creating a goal it’s also important to add a quantifier to your goal. So if you know you want to increase your income for example, it’s important to state by how much you want to increase it. When you set a quantifier for your goal you are able to measure progress along the way and determine if you were able to meet your goal as stated.
Achievable - Be sure that you set a goal that you’ll be able to achieve within the timeframe you give yourself. For instance, if you’re playing basketball and say “I’m going to make 100 consistent baskets.” and if you have not made one basket before, you may fall short of your goal. The key point here is to stretch yourself in your goal, yet don’t put your goal so far out of reach that you end up stopping in the middle of your progress due to your feelings or not even taking action to achieve your goals. One of my clients set a goal to sell 15 seats in their new offer. They ended up enrolling 25 people. In this process, we learned that their original goal was achievable and they were able to exceed their goal.
Relevant - Relevant goals are goals that speak to you and your values, goals that make you want to move to activate them. It’s not fun creating a goal that someone else wants you to do… especially when you can feel the excitement of achieving what you want to achieve. Consider your gifts and your talents when you are creating your goal. Having a relevant purpose will help you continue to work towards your goal even when things get tough.
Time Specific - When working towards a goal, it is important to put a due date to it. Setting a due date will help you prioritize your goals on a regular basis. Having a due date and timeline also helps you to mark your progress along your journey. If you don’t reach your goal by the due date you created, you can then review what impacted your progress - Did you take enough action during the timeframe you created? Did you give yourself enough time?
How will you create your goals and your worthy vision and how will you know that you've achieved that goal and/or vision?
By being very specific in my process and taking action, I’ve achieved my goals. When I have been vague and not specific, I’ve had more trouble reaching my goals.
So, what happens when you're specific? What happens when you write it down? When you put a due date and time next to your goal, or an amount you want to create? When you take action on a daily basis?
You move yourself closer to your goal and give yourself a great opportunity to achieve your goal. You have to be in-tune with yourself and what you are activating on a daily basis to make your goal a reality.
When you take action on a daily basis and do all the things you can do to achieve your goals, you activate your worthy dreams.
Also, I want to encourage you to be specific when you're needing to set boundaries and to really state what your boundaries are and not be vague about them. For instance letting your family know that you need dedicated space and time to achieve your SMART goals while walking towards your goals is a part of the process. I had a conversation recently with someone about boundaries and what that needed to be for me. The other person was open to hearing me and understood where I was coming from. Putting in the boundaries that you need to support your health, your sanity, your engagement, and whatever it is that you're doing is essential. It's what will allow more room for what you need and enjoy.
My hope is that you take these lessons and create goals that are specific to you and that you set boundaries that include what you need so that you can be in the space you're here to create, achieve your goals and do more of the things you love to do.
